Manchester City Survive Sunderland Thriller to Keep Perfect Premier League Record
Manchester, September 20, 2026 — Manchester City maintained their perfect start to the Premier League season with an entertaining 5-3 victory over Sunderland at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.
City took the lead through Enzo Fernández before Sunderland responded with a goal from Brian Brobbey. Rayan Cherki restored City's advantage, but Brobbey struck again to keep Sunderland level. Antoine Semenyo then scored twice to give City a two-goal cushion. Brobbey completed his hat-trick in the second half, but Erling Haaland scored late to finally settle the contest.
The victory leaves Manchester City with five wins from five Premier League matches, keeping them three points clear at the top going into the international break. Haaland's goal also means he has scored against all 25 Premier League clubs he has faced.

Elsewhere, Liverpool claimed a 1-0 victory away at Bournemouth, with Alexander Isak scoring the decisive second-half goal.
Isak's 57th-minute finish was his fourth Premier League goal of the season and moved Liverpool up to sixth place.
