Trump–Xi Summit: US-China Trade Truce Extended as Leaders Meet in Washington

WASHINGTON, September 24, 2026 — Chinese President Xi Jinping has arrived in Washington for a high-level state visit and talks with US President Donald Trump, with trade, artificial intelligence, Taiwan, critical minerals and wider global security issues expected to dominate the agenda.

Trump gave Xi an unusual personal welcome at Joint Base Andrews on Wednesday as the Chinese president began his three-day visit to the United States. The visit marks Xi’s first trip to Washington in more than a decade and comes at a sensitive moment in relations between the world’s two largest economies.

Trade Truce Extended

One of the key developments ahead of the summit is an agreement by Washington and Beijing to extend their existing trade truce.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the arrangement, which was originally due to expire on November 10, will now continue until January 10, 2027. The extension is intended to provide additional time for both sides to negotiate economic issues and maintain the current reduction in trade tensions.

The two governments have been working to reduce the risk of another escalation in tariffs and trade restrictions following years of economic disputes.

AI and Technology

Artificial intelligence is also expected to be an important part of the discussions.

Washington and Beijing are competing for leadership in advanced AI and semiconductor technologies. Officials have discussed establishing mechanisms to communicate about AI-related incidents and potential risks, while both countries continue to impose restrictions on sensitive technologies.

Taiwan Remains a Major Issue

Taiwan is another major point of disagreement between the two governments.

China considers Taiwan part of its territory, while the United States maintains extensive unofficial relations with Taipei and has long been involved in discussions surrounding Taiwan's security.

The issue is expected to remain among the most sensitive subjects during the Trump-Xi talks.

Rare Earth Minerals and Global Supply Chains

Critical minerals and rare-earth materials are also expected to feature prominently in the discussions.

China plays a major role in global rare-earth processing and supply chains, making the issue strategically important for industries ranging from electronics and electric vehicles to advanced defence technologies. Recent changes in Chinese rare-earth shipments have added to concerns about supply security.

Iran and Wider Global Security

The summit is taking place amid continuing tensions in the Middle East, including the conflict involving Iran.

US-China discussions are therefore expected to extend beyond bilateral trade and technology to wider geopolitical issues, including Iran and other international security concerns.

Xi Calls for Partnership

Following his arrival in the United States, Xi said China and the United States should be “partners, not rivals.” He also said the development goals of the two countries can complement each other and benefit the wider world.

The Trump-Xi meeting comes as both governments attempt to manage major disagreements while keeping economic and diplomatic communication open.

The outcome of the Washington talks could have implications for global trade, technology supply chains, financial markets and international relations in the months ahead.
