Delhi’s Historic Race Course Mosque Faces Eviction Threat | Islam Global News

BREAKING NEWS | OCTOBER 24, 2026

A historic mosque near the official residence of India’s Prime Minister is at the centre of a growing dispute over land ownership, heritage protection and access to a place of worship.

The Race Course Mosque in New Delhi, believed to be more than a century old, has reportedly been served a notice directing its management to vacate the premises within six days.

According to media reports, the mosque’s electricity and water supplies were disconnected on October 7, making it increasingly difficult for worshippers to access essential facilities.

The mosque is listed as a Grade II heritage property by the New Delhi Municipal Council and is also cited in the Delhi Administration’s 1977 Gazette as a Waqf property.

However, the Land and Development Office maintains that the land belongs to the central government and considers the occupation unauthorised.

The controversy has drawn criticism from PDP president Mehbooba Mufti, who accused the government of disregarding the religious sentiments of India’s Muslim community.

Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind has also approached Union Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, seeking intervention to protect the mosque and its adjoining graveyard.

In the latest legal development, the Delhi High Court declined to order the restoration of the mosque’s water and electricity connections. The court’s decision did not resolve the broader disputed questions concerning the property’s legal status.

Meanwhile, worshippers were able to offer prayers at the mosque on October 24 amid police surveillance and restrictions on access, according to reports.

The key question now is whether the dispute will be resolved through legal and administrative proceedings, and what the future holds for this historic place of worship.

The heritage status, land ownership claims and legal proceedings must all be examined carefully before concluding the authorities’ intentions.
