Israel Has No Plans to Force Palestinians Out of Gaza, Foreign Minister Says
Jerusalem: Israel has no plans to forcibly expel or deport Palestinians from the Gaza Strip, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar said on Wednesday, September 9, amid renewed international attention over proposals to relocate Gaza’s population.
Speaking at a press conference in Ljubljana, Slovenia, Saar said Israel would not force Palestinians to leave Gaza against their will.
“If someone wants to leave voluntarily and there is a country willing to accept them, we will not oppose that,” Saar said, while emphasizing that Israel would not forcibly remove anyone from the Gaza Strip.
Statement Comes After Proposals From Israeli Ministers
Saar’s remarks came after senior Israeli officials recently discussed proposals involving the departure of Palestinians from Gaza.
Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said on September 2 that he did not see a long-term solution for Gaza without Palestinian migration. National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir subsequently outlined a plan involving what he described as the “voluntary emigration” of Gaza’s population.
Saar’s statement therefore represents an attempt to clarify the Israeli government’s current position, particularly over whether Palestinians would be removed from Gaza against their will.
Fighting and Humanitarian Crisis Continue
Despite the statement regarding forced displacement, violence in Gaza has continued.
Palestinian news agency WAFA reported early Thursday that Israeli helicopters opened fire near the Jabalia refugee camp in northern Gaza, while artillery shelling was reported in several areas of the northern Gaza Strip. Palestinian medical sources cited by WAFA said casualties from the ongoing conflict continue to rise.
The humanitarian situation remains a major international concern, with millions of Palestinians facing displacement and continuing difficulties accessing food, water, medical care and adequate shelter.
International Attention on Gaza’s Future
The question of what happens to Gaza’s population after the conflict remains one of the most sensitive issues in the wider Israel-Palestine conflict.
While Israel’s foreign minister says there is currently no policy to forcibly deport Palestinians, statements from other Israeli officials have continued to fuel debate over proposals for Palestinians to leave the territory.
For Palestinians and international observers, the distinction between voluntary departure and forced displacement remains central to the debate over Gaza’s future.
