Istanbul Hosts International Gathering of Muslim Scholars
An international conference focused on Muslim unity opened in Istanbul, Türkiye, bringing together approximately 250 Muslim scholars, researchers, thinkers and preachers from several countries.
Titled “The Centrist Ummah’s Unity: From Shared Principles to a Charter of Unity,” the three-day gathering began on October 28, 2026. It is being held under the auspices of the International Union of Muslim Scholars.
According to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), a Syrian delegation led by Minister of Awqaf Mohammad Abu al-Khair Shukri attended the opening session. The gathering aims to encourage dialogue among scholars from different Islamic schools of thought and jurisprudential traditions.
Focus on Shared Islamic Principles
Discussions are centred on identifying common ground within the Muslim community and exploring ways to strengthen cooperation among Islamic scholars.
Participants are examining shared principles rooted in the Holy Quran and the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), alongside proposals for a charter intended to promote unity across Muslim communities.
During the opening session, Syrian Minister Mohammad Abu al-Khair Shukri highlighted the importance of coordinating efforts and encouraging a common approach to Islamic discourse.
He also referred to Syria's experience in developing a charter on Islamic discourse with the involvement of religious authorities and scholars.
Turning Dialogue into Practical Action
The conference is expected to include academic discussions and workshops addressing the proposed Charter of Ummah Unity.
Participants are also discussing the need for practical implementation plans and follow-up mechanisms so that the gathering's objectives can extend beyond statements and discussions.
Mohammad Muadh Abu Saleh, director of the Jeel al-Quran Endowment, emphasised the importance of dialogue, rapprochement and solidarity in addressing challenges facing Muslim communities.
Why the Conference Matters
Muslim communities worldwide have diverse cultural backgrounds, legal traditions and religious institutions. Initiatives that encourage respectful dialogue can create opportunities for cooperation in education, community development, religious scholarship and social welfare.
The Istanbul conference provides a platform for scholars from different traditions to discuss shared concerns. Its practical impact will depend on the recommendations adopted and whether participating organisations follow through on them.
According to SANA, the conference is scheduled to conclude after Friday prayers, with a final statement expected to outline its outcomes.
Islam Global News will continue to follow developments from the conference and report any significant decisions or recommendations announced by the organisers.
