OpenAI Launches GPT-6 Astra
as Al Moves Toward More Advanced Computer-Based Work
September 19, 2026
OpenAl has introduced GPT-6 Astra, a new generation of artificial intelligence designed to handle complex reasoning, software engineering, computer use, web browsing and demanding professional workflows.
The company describes Astra as its most intelligent and aligned model to date, with capabilities extending beyond conventional chatbot interactions. The model is being made available through the OpenAI API, as well as ChatGPT and other platforms. OpenA
A new focus on Al agents One of the major changes with GPT-6 Astra is its ability to work through multi-step tasks using computers and software. According to OpenAl, Astra can handle activities such as filling online forms, updating customer records, conducting online research, working with documents and spreadsheets, testing websites and troubleshooting software. OpenA This moves Al closer to an agent-style workflow, where a model can not only provide information but also perform a sequence of actions to complete a task. Stronger coding capabilities OpenAl says GPT-6 Astra represents a major step forward for software engineering. The model can work with large codebases, help debug software, perform browser-based testing and assist developers in moving projects from an idea toward a work oplication. OpenAI
Advanced computer use Computer interaction is another major focus of the new model. OpenAl says Astra can interact with websites and applications, analyse information on screen and perform practical tasks. The company reports that Astra completed computer-use tasks substantially faster than its previous GPT-5.6 Sol model in its internal testing. OpenAI For businesses, this could make Al useful for repetitive digital workflows such as research, data entry, document preparation and software testing. Designed for professional work GPT-6 Astra is also being positioned as a model for professional environments.
Cybersecurity brings new challenges
The increased capability also comes with additional safety considerations.
OpenAl says Astra represents a significant increase in cybersecurity capability and has introduced additional safeguards for its deployment. The company says the model can help defenders with activities such as secure code review and vulnerability remediation, while more advanced offensive cybersecurity requests can be restricted. OpenAl
When will GPT-6 Astra be available?
OpenAl says GPT-6 Astra is rolling out initially to a limited group and is becoming available to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise users, as well as developers through the OpenAl API, Microsoft Azure ar ^mazon Bedrock.
For API developers, the model is available under the identifier gpt-6-astra. OpenAl lists standard API pricing at $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens, with separate pricing for cached tokens and fast processing.

The bigger picture
The launch of GPT-6 Astra reflects a broader shift in artificial intelligence from simple question-and-answer systems toward Al agents capable of reasoning, using software and completing multi-step workflows.
If these capabilities continue to improve, Al could increasingly become part of everyday business operations, software development, research and digital services.
For developers and businesses, the important question is no longer simply whether Al can generate content - but how much real-world work an Al system can safely complete on its own.
