A major controversy has erupted in Azerbaijan and Austria over restrictions on hijab in educational institutions.
In Azerbaijan, under new school uniform regulations implemented on October 12, pupils and teachers wearing hijabs were denied entry to schools nationwide. This decision has triggered mass protests and acts of public disobedience in several cities.
The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) has condemned the move, stating that the ban is a clear violation of religious freedom. Human rights groups, including Amnesty International, have also urged the government to stop denying access to education through discriminatory hijab restrictions.
In Austria, a similar situation is unfolding. On October 9, 2026, Muslim schoolgirls staged a large demonstration in Vienna against the headscarf ban in schools. Protesters held placards reading "I Wear What I Want" and "Stop Targeting Muslims", stating that the law infringes on their religious freedom and targets Muslim girls.
Students say that education and religious identity should go together, and no girl should be forced to choose between her faith and her education.
The protests in both countries have gained international attention, with Muslim communities worldwide calling for the protection of religious rights in schools.
