Indian Markets Rebound as Oil Prices Ease; Nifty50 Closes Above 23,400

New Delhi, September 21, 2026: Indian benchmark indices ended higher on Monday as easing crude oil prices and softer bond yields helped improve investor sentiment. The recovery came after several sessions of weakness, with traders closely watching developments surrounding the US-Iran conflict and global energy supplies.

The Nifty50 closed at 23,414, gaining 0.2%, while market volatility also moderated during the session.

Oil Prices Ease

Crude oil prices declined to their lowest levels since September 10. Brent crude traded near $102 a barrel, while US crude moved below the $100 mark.

Markets are responding to expectations that diplomatic efforts could gain momentum this week in relation to the US-Iran conflict. A partial improvement in Saudi oil shipments also helped ease some supply concerns.

However, continued Houthi missile and drone attacks targeting Saudi Arabia remain a major risk for energy markets and could quickly alter the supply outlook.

Pharma, Realty and Cement Stocks Lead

Buying interest was concentrated in several sectors.

The Nifty Cement index rose around 1.9%, while Pharma and Realty gained about 1.1% each.

On the other hand, Railway PSUs, Capital Markets and Metal stocks remained under pressure. The Nifty India Railways PSUs index declined around 1.5%, while Capital Markets fell 1.3%.

India's volatility gauge, India VIX, declined by nearly 1%, indicating a modest improvement in market sentiment.

Top Nifty50 Movers

Among the major gainers, Solar Industries India rose 3.8%, followed by Eternal at 2.8%, Torrent Pharmaceuticals at 2.7%, HCL Technologies at 2.5% and DLF at 2.5%.

On the declining side, Bharti Airtel fell 3.3%, while Hyundai Motor India dropped 2.9%. Adani Energy Solutions and Vedanta each declined around 2.7%, while Adani Green Energy slipped 2.3%.

Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders declined around 2.1% after announcing an MoU with National Shipbuilding and Heavy Industries Park-AP for a proposed greenfield shipyard at Dugarajapatnam in Andhra Pradesh. The project is expected to involve investment of about ₹15,000 crore over five to seven years.

Nibe gained 6.5% after signing an agreement with France's Naval Group covering naval shipbuilding and defence technologies, including underwater drones, submarine systems and mine-countermeasure capabilities.

RVNL fell about 2.1% after receiving a ₹404.88 crore Letter of Acceptance from East Coast Railway for third-line works covering the Bhadrak–Vizianagaram railway section.

Meanwhile, Lenskart came under pressure ahead of a proposed block transaction valued at roughly ₹2,047 crore.

IPO Activity Picks Up

The primary market is also expected to remain active this week, with several mainboard IPOs scheduled to open between September 22 and September 24.

Investors will be watching subscription trends and institutional participation as the new issues enter the market.

Global Market Watch

Energy concerns continue to dominate global markets. US average diesel prices have climbed sharply, while European governments are examining measures to manage fuel supply risks as disruptions to Saudi oil infrastructure continue.

The Japanese yen has also remained under pressure following shifting expectations around US and Japanese monetary policy. Market participants are watching closely for any signs of official intervention.

What Investors Are Watching

For Indian markets, crude oil prices, developments in the US-Iran conflict, Saudi energy shipments, global bond yields and foreign investor flows are likely to remain important near-term indicators.

The latest session showed some improvement in risk appetite, but continued geopolitical uncertainty means volatility could remain elevated.
