Indian Markets Hold Steady as Oil Prices Ease and Volatility Declines
Mumbai, September 18, 2026 — Indian equity markets remained broadly stable on Friday as easing crude oil prices and reduced concerns over energy supply disruptions provided support to investor sentiment.
The Sensex closed at 74,294.00, while the Nifty 50 ended at 23,346.00, gaining around 0.3%. The Bank Nifty stood at 56,358.00, up approximately 0.5%.
Oil Prices Offer Relief
A sharp decline in oil prices helped ease concerns surrounding India's import bill and inflation outlook. Saudi Arabia's efforts to use alternative export routes following disruptions to its oil infrastructure helped reduce fears of a prolonged supply shortage.
For India, lower crude prices can be significant because the country remains heavily dependent on imported oil. A sustained moderation in energy costs could reduce pressure on inflation and the country's external balance.
RBI Moves to Manage Banking Liquidity
The Reserve Bank of India also remained a key focus for domestic investors after conducting an open market operation involving ₹50,000 crore of government bonds.
The move was aimed at absorbing surplus liquidity from the banking system. Changes in system liquidity can influence short-term money-market conditions and borrowing costs across the economy.
US Labour Market Shows Resilience
Global markets also received support from fresh US employment data. Weekly jobless claims declined to their lowest level since July, suggesting that the American labour market continues to show resilience despite elevated borrowing costs.
Investors are closely watching US economic data for clues about the future direction of monetary policy and global interest rates.
Nifty Remains in a Narrow Range
From a market-technical perspective, the Nifty 50 continues to consolidate around the 23,300–23,500 range.
A sustained move outside this zone could provide investors with a clearer indication of the market's next direction. Until then, trading may remain range-bound and sensitive to global developments.
Railway, Tourism and Infrastructure Stocks Lead
Sector-wise, railway public-sector companies, tourism-related stocks and infrastructure and logistics shares were among the stronger performers during the session.
Meanwhile, IT and consumer durable stocks remained under pressure.
Market volatility also eased significantly, with the India VIX falling nearly 7%, indicating a reduction in near-term market anxiety.
What Investors Are Watching
Markets are likely to remain sensitive to three major factors in the coming sessions:
- Crude oil prices and Middle East supply developments
- US economic data and interest-rate expectations
- Domestic liquidity conditions and RBI policy
With the Nifty currently consolidating near the 23,300–23,500 zone, traders may continue to monitor global energy developments and institutional flows for the next major market signal.
