Islam in America: 5.5 Million Muslims and Nearly 2,800 Mosques — What the Latest Data Reveals

Islam Global News | World News

The Muslim population in the United States has grown significantly over the past two decades, while mosques and Islamic centres have become an increasingly visible part of the country’s religious landscape.

According to a Pew Research Center report published in September 2026, the United States is home to approximately 5.5 million Muslims. The report highlights the changing profile of Muslim Americans more than 25 years after the September 11 attacks.

Nearly 2,800 Mosques Across America

The 2020 U.S. Mosque Survey identified 2,769 mosques across the United States, reflecting substantial growth compared with previous decades. These mosques serve as centres for daily prayers, Friday congregational prayers, Islamic education, community activities and charitable initiatives.

The figure is based on the 2020 survey and should not be interpreted as a confirmed count for 2026.

How Many Americans Are Embracing Islam?

Interest in religious conversion is another important aspect of the Muslim community in America. The 2020 U.S. Mosque Survey recorded 31,290 people reported as converts to Islam by participating mosques.

However, this figure represents data collected through the mosque survey, not a complete national count of everyone who embraced Islam during a specific year. There is currently no reliably established nationwide figure showing exactly how many Americans convert to Islam each day.

Research from the Institute for Social Policy and Understanding (ISPU) also examines the experiences and backgrounds of American Muslims who have embraced Islam, including people raised in other religious traditions and those without a religious affiliation.

What Is Driving the Growth of the Muslim Population?

The growth of the Muslim population in the United States cannot be attributed to conversion alone. Immigration, births, age distribution and religious identification also contribute to demographic change.

Mosques play a central role in supporting Muslim communities by providing places of worship, educational programmes, social services and opportunities for community engagement.

A Growing Part of America's Religious Landscape

The available research demonstrates the significant presence of Muslims in American society. Nevertheless, population estimates, mosque counts and conversion figures measure different aspects of the community and should not be treated as interchangeable statistics.

Further nationally representative research will be needed to establish a reliable current estimate of annual and daily conversions to Islam across the United States.
