Islamic news agencies are being encouraged to strengthen cooperation on artificial intelligence, digital media and information verification to help address the challenges facing news organisations across the Muslim world.
The issue was highlighted during a high-level discussion at the Read 2026 World Conference in Rabat, Morocco, on 25 October.
The Director General of the Union of OIC News Agencies emphasised the importance of developing AI systems that reflect the cultural characteristics of Islamic societies while respecting human dignity, ethical principles and sustainable development.
Focus on Media Training and Fact-Checking
The discussion highlighted three important areas for cooperation: training journalists in responsible AI use, developing tools to identify misinformation and deepfakes, and integrating AI into everyday newsroom operations.
Participants also stressed that AI can help news organisations with translation, content exchange and media production. However, they warned that automated systems can spread false information and reinforce cultural or political biases if they are not properly managed.
Why It Matters to Muslim Communities
Digital media plays an increasingly important role in how people across the Muslim world receive news about education, humanitarian issues, religious affairs and international developments.
Improved fact-checking and responsible AI practices could help news organisations identify misleading claims and make reliable information available in more languages.
The discussion also highlighted the need for greater cooperation between Islamic institutions and news organisations, particularly where digital infrastructure and technical resources remain limited.
What Comes Next?
Further progress will depend on practical initiatives, including journalist training, investment in digital infrastructure and the development of reliable verification systems.
For news organisations serving Muslim audiences, the central challenge is to use emerging technology without compromising accuracy, editorial independence or public trust.
