The United Nations has issued one of its strongest recent warnings on artificial intelligence, calling for urgent international safeguards as increasingly powerful AI systems raise concerns over cybersecurity, critical infrastructure and human rights

GENEVA — The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence is prompting renewed international concern over whether governments and technology companies are moving fast enough to control the risks created by increasingly powerful AI systems. UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk warned that advanced artificial intelligence could eventually create risks serious enough to affect humanity on a global scale. He called for stronger international safeguards and clear limits around the development and deployment of high-risk AI technologies

The warning comes as AI systems move beyond traditional chatbots and search tools into areas such as software development, cybersecurity, autonomous decision-making and critical infrastructure. Türk argued that the concentration of advanced AI development among a relatively small number of major technology companies makes international oversight increasingly important. He called for countries involved in the AI supply chain and development ecosystem to work toward common safety standards and clearly defined regulatory boundaries
