Inside the Holy Kaaba: Who Was Granted Rare Access in 2026? The sacred structure, located at the centre of Masjid al-Haram in Makkah, is normally closed to the public. On November 1, 2026, Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and members of his delegation were granted special access to enter the Kaaba and offer prayers. A previous Nigerian president also entered President Tinubu was not the first Nigerian head of state to receive this privilege. Former President Muhammadu Buhari entered the Kaaba on February 26, 2016, during an official visit to Saudi Arabia. Reports also document an earlier entry in 1984 when he was Nigeria's military head of state. Who decides who can enter the Kaaba? Saudi authorities control access to the interior of the Kaaba and grant it on special occasions. It is not a public attraction, and ordinary Umrah pilgrims cannot enter simply by purchasing a package or obtaining a standard visa.
