JAKIM Warns Slaughterhouses: Halal Certificates Could Be Revoked for Violating Islamic Standards ISLAM GLOBAL NEWS | MALAYSIA REPORT Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia | 7 November 2026 Malaysia's Department of Islamic Development (JAKIM) has warned slaughterhouse operators that failure to comply with Islamic halal requirements could result in enforcement action, including suspension or cancellation of their Malaysian Halal Certification (SPHM). JAKIM Director-General Datuk Dr Sirajuddin Suhaimee said the authorities would take action against facilities found violating halal slaughtering standards, depending on the seriousness and category of non-compliance. 218 Slaughterhouses Hold Valid Halal Certification According to JAKIM, 218 slaughterhouses nationwide held valid Malaysian Halal Certification (SPHM) as of November 2, 2026. Each certified facility is monitored at least twice a year to ensure continued compliance with halal slaughtering procedures and certification requirements. Surprise Inspections to Strengthen Halal Compliance JAKIM conducts unannounced inspections to ensure slaughterhouses follow the required standards. The monitoring process includes: - Verification of certification and operational documents. - Interviews with slaughterhouse employees. - Examination of slaughtering procedures. - Photographic documentation and evidence collection. - Collection of samples where necessary. - Assessment of halal management and handling practices. Authorities may also conduct additional inspections based on previous findings, complaints and the effectiveness of corrective measures. Halal Certificates Can Be Suspended or Revoked JAKIM said facilities found violating halal requirements could face several enforcement measures, depending on the seriousness of the violations. These include: 1. Issuance of a Malaysian Halal Certification Non-Compliance Notice. 2. Suspension of the SPHM certificate. 3. Withdrawal or cancellation of halal certification. The authorities stressed that serious violations involving Islamic slaughtering requirements cannot simply be resolved through administrative corrective action if the slaughter itself was not halal. Puchong Chicken Slaughterhouse Case Raises Concerns The warning follows a recent enforcement operation at a chicken slaughtering and processing facility in Kampung Sri Aman Hilir, Puchong, Selangor. Authorities seized more than 6.5 tonnes of raw chicken during a raid on October 30, 2026, after suspected violations involving the slaughtering and processing procedures. Initial findings raised concerns about the use of an electrical water-bath stunning method that allegedly exceeded the permitted limits, potentially causing some chickens to die before slaughter. Authorities also reported that the premises did not hold a valid Malaysian Halal Certification. The case is under investigation, and the allegations should not be treated as final judicial findings. JAKIM Monitoring Also Covers Misuse of Halal Logos JAKIM explained that its enforcement efforts are not limited to slaughterhouses holding SPHM certificates. Authorities may also investigate businesses that misuse halal logos or make misleading halal representations without valid certification. Enforcement can involve the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN), state Islamic religious authorities and other relevant agencies under Malaysia's Trade Descriptions Act 2011 and associated halal regulations. Protecting Muslim Consumers and Halal Supply Chains Malaysia's halal certification system plays an important role in consumer confidence, food safety and the country's international halal industry. JAKIM has encouraged the public to report suspected halal violations, misuse of certification logos and misleading halal claims through its official public complaints system. Consumers are also encouraged to check the validity of halal certification before purchasing products from slaughterhouses and food-processing facilities. Conclusion JAKIM's latest warning highlights the importance of maintaining strict halal slaughtering standards throughout Malaysia's food supply chain. With 218 certified slaughterhouses under regular monitoring, the authorities say inspections and enforcement measures will continue to protect halal integrity and Muslim consumers' confidence.
